Laconia Kiwanis comes to the rescue of the 8th grade graduation class of Memorial Middle School, with a $500 donation. The 8th graders at MMS have been struggling to raise funds for their graduation ceremonies. They have had numerous fundraisers in the last 4 months, which include many bake sales, selling Avon products, selling T-Shirts, taping staff at the school to the wall, bumper stickers for a $1.00 donation, a PACT dance, and the latest being a huge yard sale on May 28th, in which they are renting spaces, seeking donations, doing appraisals, and selling food and baked goods. The goal of all these hard
working kids (and parents) is $2,000 to $3,000. With all the help they have received from Kiwanis and the community, the class will hopefully have met their goals after the yard sale is completed.8th-Grader Andy Perkins is presented funds from Pres. Paul Cotton to go towards their prom and graduation ceremonies.

This writer introduced Lt. Michael Shastany and Firefighter Chuck Campbell, Laconia Fire Dept., to the club. They were on hand to present the portable defibrillator the Emergency Medical Technicians use as well as the AED--Automated External Defibrillator. The AED is set up to be used effectively by a layman with simple instructions and voice prompts to allow analysis and treatment of a victim. EMT Chuck Campbell pointed out that 250,000 die each year from heart attacks. If the AED was used in each case, $50,000 could survive. For more information go to laconiafire.org.Lt. Mike Shastany is hooked up with sensor leads and EMT Chuck Campbell shows the paddles that deliver the electric shock.
