Hey Kiwanis...THANKS!
We received a thank you letter from the Mayhew Program for our continued support of their efforts, both in helping to get the camp ready each year and for our financial support. The letter was accompanied by two letters from students that benefited from the program.

On The Boardwalk...
We were presented with an application for our usual vendor space on the boardwalk for motorcycle week. We need to come up with a fundraiser that we can do that week in order to use the space because if we don't use it...we will lose it. Therefore: the fundraising committee will get together for short meeting after the regular meeting next Tuesday, January 22nd.

Speaking of the meeting next week:

Please remember that the meeting will be Tuesday because of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. Also, remember that we will be back in the friendly confines of One Mill Plaza.

The Lodge
This week, our charity nights at The Lodge in Belmont come to an end. Our last night is Friday, January 18th. Joe Adrignola will be announcing a total raised at the Tuesday meeting and it could exceed $5,000. A great effort by those who participated and a special tip of the cap to Larry Murphy and Ed Merski, who worked the most number of shifts. By the way, at last check, Larry was still playing with house money!

Reading is FUNdamental
We have a RIF distribution scheduled next week at Elm Street School. The event is Wednesday, January 23rd at 1:30. Scheduled to be there are Don Nelson, Joe Collie, Joe Adrignola, Kathy Calvin, and Larry Murphy. See you there!

Groovy, Man!
Roger Landry reminded the club to consider sponsoring a table at the Groovy 60s event to benefit the Belknap Mill Society. The event is scheduled for May 9th at the Laconia Ice Arena. Tables are available for sponsorship and being a sponsor includes exposure in all the advertising and the promotion leading up to the event, plus a number of tickets to the event for club members to sit at our table. The board has been asked to consider sponsoring the event. Stay Tuned!

Notes on the Boys & Girls Club of the Lakes Region
Dianne Zawacki is the Executive Director and Colleen Gould is the Program Director. Leo and Ron, two members of the board of directors spoke to the club about the facility and the organization. Some of the highlights were:
*** The organization is made up of the Teen Center for high school kids and the Kids Club for pre-teen kids.
*** In addition to the Sacred Heart building, the program utilizes the gym 2-3 days a week and offers programs in there.
*** Long term goals include expanding the hours till 9 each evening and adding some Saturday hours.
*** The organization is in a fast paced growing mode and something new is added everyday.
*** An organized campaign to raise funds is under way now, including federal grants and solicitation from local organizations.
*** A new on site director is being sought so that Colleen can go into schools and take the programs to the kids.
*** Current communities that benefit from the center are Laconia, Belmont, Gilford, and Winnisquam.
*** A dental program is being started and a dental hygienist has already been in to see the younger kids
*** Some of the programs offered include homework programs, career programs, arts and crafts, LNA training, culinary programs, dodge ball, basketball, and more are being added all the time. Students are encouraged to do more than one program to offer a more well rounded experience

Quotable Quote:
Ed Chertok's response (from Florida) after receiving the email that said Monday evening's meeting was postponed until Tuesday:

"I won't be able to make the meeting have to stay and enjoy the swimming pool oogling the bathing beauties who are in their seventh or eighth decades.
Did work yesterday @the Margate/Coconut Kiwanis Club annual Pancake Breakfast. One member sold 150 tickets @ $4.00 each."
