We received a thank you note from D.A.R.E. thanking us for our donation and all of our administrative support.
The note came from Patrol Officer Liza Levin, the Laconia Police officer in charge of the program and the PD.
We also received a nice thank you from the Key Club thanking us for our donation to their South Africa trip.
Seth and Ivy Levitt-Carlson say it will make their trip more of reality.
Brian proudly displays his collection of Key Club autographs...almost a whole set!

Lt. Gov. Joe Collie attended the Kiwanis mid-winter training session in Mansfield, Massachusetts and the Lt. Governor Board meeting. Several items were discussed, including the Lt. Governor term being expanded to 2 years and a regionalizing of the training sessions, making it easier for Kiwanians to attend.InterClub opportunity:
Lt. Governor Joe reminds that the North Conway Club and the Dover Club are having an InterClub at Indian Mound Golf Club in Ossipee and if anyone would like to join Joe in going, it will be a fun night with others in Kiwanis and we we could have an InterClub, which would be our 3rd in a year; a tremendous feat, if enough members came along. Perhaps you'd like to attend that next week vs. the Monday meeting. The dinner is on Wednesday, March 25th and please let Joe Collie know if your are interested as soon as possible so he can RSVP to the North Conway Club. E-mail Joe at joecollie@gmail.com or call him at 603-455-5309. Cost is $15. Thanks!
Kiwanis KARES:
Kathy Calvin gave a KARES Update and passed around thank you cards from the kids. Chet Cilley, Joe Adrignola, Kathy Calvin, Don Nelson, and Linda Brandt from Smith Barney in attendance. The next KARES is scheduled for next Monday at Elm Street School at 9:30am. A sign up sheet went around.Remembering Tex...
Dick Breton spoke about Tex Holland, who passed away this weekend. Dick said he brought Tex into the club in the late 60s/early 70s and he went on to be president in 1974-1975 and is a former Lt. Governor. Dick said that Tex was the treasurer at Lakes Region General Hospital for a long time. Dick and Priscilla saw him Saturday night at LRGH. He passed Sunday night after a long illness. He will be missed.

Help Out Lakes Region Child Care Services...
Lakes Region Childcare is holding it's annual calendar raffle and they will draw a winning ticket every day in the month of April. Prizes range from $25.00 gift certificate to the movies, $50.00 gift certificates to many local restaurants. Meadowbrook has donated an "inner Circle membership" worth $300.00. And last, but not least, there will also be Red Sox tickets given away on April 1 and April 30. Tickets are only $10.00 each. If you are interested, please let Kathy Calvin know at kgc@mlolaw.com or (603) 527-9182. Kathy sold several at the meeting tonight, but if you didn't get yours, give her a call. Thanks for your support of LRCCS.
Tilly: The Sequel...
Sec'y Kathy reports that Lou Ricciardello has another corpse flower blooming at the greenhouse and this one is a rebloom of the original Tilly the Titan that bloomed three years ago and was shown to the public at the Lakeport Fire Station. You must remember the Tilly T-shirts, no? This bloom will not be shown at the fire station because of the cold temperatures, but the club was invited to the greenhouse after the meeting, from 7p-9p. Light refreshments and pastry was made available. Check out the pictures at the bottom of this page or "click" here.

Guest Speakers:
Our Guest Speakers were Christy Cunningham and Kelley Gaspa ofProject XTRA. This is a program in the Laconia School District that is available at all the schools in the district and provides kids with extra help and guidance after school. Christy is the site director at Elm Street School and Kelly handles Pleasant Street.
The hours between 3 and 6pm can be the riskiest for the kids in the district. It is the time when, if kids are left unsupervised, juvenile crimes rates, experimentation with drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, and sex nearly triples. But after school can be a great time for kids. Studies show that youth who participate in after school programs have better academic performance, behavior and social attendance and greater expectations for the future. This is at the core of the Project XTRA mission.
The program was founded in 2003 and served more than 1100 kids at the 5 schools in Laconia during the 2005/2006 school year. They do school work and homework help after school and have a snack for $35 a week...and they have a day long summer program that included field trips and beach days for $90 per week. No child is turned away for inability to pay. 40% of students participate on a regular basis and 72% of those showed academic improvement.
Christy and Kelley showed slide show of the kids and the fun times they all have at Project XTRA. They also handed out an information flyer on the program and shared a copy of the program's annual report. This year, they are running at full capacity because of the demand for the program.
