DONATIONS:
The Board voted to make the following donations:
• $250 to Camp Mayhew
• $250 to The Circle Program

KEY CLUB NEWS:
Steve Loughlin updated the Board on the LHS Key Club.

The Laconia High School Key Club recently made a $1,000 donation to Laconia and also donated $50 to The Thirst Project which is an International Key Club Project.

Ella Muller, the LHS Key Club’s immediate-past secretary, was recently appointed Lieutenant Governor - Division 31 of the New England & Bermuda District.

Division 31 includes four Key Clubs in Connecticut. Although Division 31 is quite a distance from New Hampshire, Ella will be initially communicating in her position via online platforms. This fall, Ella will enter her junior year at Laconia High School. Best wishes, Ella!

Congratulations to Lydia Tucker who recently received “The Robert F. Lucas Outstanding Lieutenant Governor’s Award” for her accomplishments while she was the 2019-2020 Division 5 Key Club Lieutenant Governor of the New England & Bermuda District. This prestigious award, which recognizes outstanding work and exceptional character of a Lieutenant Governor, is chosen by the New England & Bermuda Key Club Adult Advisors. Only three Lieutenant Governors in the District (out of 26) are chosen for this prestigious award.

The three award winners were to be honored at the annual Key Club District Educational Conference (DECON) which was to be held in Springfield, MA (during the weekend of April 3-5) but due to the Corona virus, recipients received their plaque via mail. This fall, Lydia will enter her senior year at Laconia High School.

LACONIA KIWANIS CLUB AWARDS SCHOLARSHIPS:

The Laconia Kiwanis Club, through the Lakes Region Scholarship Foundation, has been awarding scholarships for college bound seniors annually for over 60 years. When the organization was founded in 1956, the Laconia Kiwanis Club was one of the original eight donors!  At that time, the Club donated a total of $200 to two recipients. In most cases, scholarships from the Laconia Kiwanis Club are awarded to active LHS Key Club members and Kiwanis related students. This year, the Laconia Kiwanis Club awarded six scholarships totaling $4,500.  This included current graduates Heather Ausevich, Randi Byars, Maci Howland, and Nicole Turpin as well as four recent graduates.

Since the inception of the Lakes Region Scholarship Foundation in 1956, the Laconia Kiwanis Club has awarded scholarships totaling $121,975.

The Laconia Kiwanis Club handles the administration of the Smith Memorial Scholarship, which was established in honor of Charlie Smith. Charlie Smith was a Laconia Kiwanis Club member during the 1970’s into the early 1990’s.

Because of his active participation and hard work, Charlie Smith was recognized as Kiwanian of the Year in 1982 and again in 1988. Charlie was renowned and respected as an agriculturist and specialist in soils, grasses and hays. While still a student at UNH, he opened Smith’s Apple Orchard in Belmont, which later became one of the area’s first “pick your own” orchards. (The orchard was sold to Rob and Wende Richter in 1985.)

As a Laconia City Councilman during the 1980’s, Charlie was a major proponent for upgrading the outdated cinder track at Opechee Park. The new track was named Smith Track for Charlie Smith and Erwin Smith (former Laconia track coach) “in honor of their years of service and dedication to youth.”

Since its inception in 1997, the Charles M. Smith – Kiwanis Club of Laconia Award has awarded scholarships totaling $16,000 which includes scholarships to this year’s recipients - Desteney Jones and Noah Mousseau.
