Muff noted the fantasy trip was real at a location looking out at the water in the evening sun with chicken sizzling on a grill. The fantasy trip is a Laconia Kiwanis Club outing scheduled to be held at the South Down Shores Beach House on August 10th. This barbecue social will be held from 6-9 PM. The menu will include BBQ chicken. Members are invited to bring a dish to share, bring a bottle of wine or 6-pack of beer to share. Most importantly, bring your spouse and bring some friends.
Betty Ballantyne briefed the Club on what has been done initially for this year's Roger's Ride fund-raiser, scheduled for Sunday, August 30th. She is asking for volunteers to populate a committee, and announced the Inn at Mills Falls has again donated a 2-night stay. We hope to raffle off 500 tickets at a price of $5 per ticket.
Joe Adrignola briefed the Club on the initial meeting of a committee to ensure we will have a presence at the upcoming Pumpkin Fest, being held in Laconia this year on Friday, October 24th. Joe solicited ideas on what our booth may have, and how we run it.

Steve also reported that the Laconia Kiwanis Club handles the administration of the Smith Memorial Scholarship, which was established in honor of Charlie Smith. Charlie Smith was a Laconia Kiwanis Club member during the 1970’s into the early 1990’s. Because of his active participation and hard work, he was recognized as Kiwanian of the Year in 1982 and again in 1988. Charlie was renowned and respected as an agriculturist and specialist in soils, grasses and hays. While still a student at UNH, he opened Smith’s Apple Orchard in Belmont, which later became one of the areas first “pick your own” orchards. (The orchard was sold to present owners Rob and Wende Richter in 1985.) As a Laconia City Councilman during the 1980’s, Charlie was a major proponent for upgrading the outdated cinder track at Opechee Park. The new track was named Smith Track for Charlie Smith and Erwin Smith (former Laconia track coach) “in honor of their years of service and dedication to youth.”
Details on the recipient of this year's Smith Memorial Scholarship is listed below:

Guest Speaker:
Betty Ballantyne introduced our guest speaker, John Rogers of the Laconia Area Bicycle Exchange (LABE). John has been a Gilford resident for 16 years. Prior to that, he operated an apple orchard near Lancaster, New Hampshire.
John Rogers presented his program, a Better-Together-inspired bicycle exchange in Laconia, currently located on Court St. Donations of bicycles and/or money are always appreciated. To date the exchange (LABE) has given out over 150 bicycles to residents either referred by an in-town agency or as walk-ins. Some bikes are for sale as well, to ensure client buy-in of the bike. Being an exchange, clients can also trade to get a larger or more suitable bike. LABE bikes are labeled and relationships exist with local police and pawnshops to ensure no scamming of the exchange occurs. John has presented to several local groups, and is scheduled to present to the City Council as well, as he advocates for transforming Laconia into a more bike-friendly city.
For more information on the Laconia Area Bicycle Exchange, check out their website by “clicking” here.
John Rogers accepts a "thank you" gift from Betty Ballantyne in appreciation of his presentation.
