NEWS FROM THE PRESIDENT:

President Bill discussed possibly cancelling the July 2nd Board meeting, choosing instead to do it electronically if there is business to tend to. Bill also reminded the Club that July 23rd is the date of the next regular Club meeting. The program will tentatively be LPD Chief Matt Canfield, or LFD Chief Kirk Beatty. Bill then solicited input from members.

NEWS FROM THE MEMBERS:

Betty Ballantyne asked the Club about a potential guest speaker, retired Army General Don Bolduc, who recently announced his candidacy for the US Senate. John opined that given his comments printed in today's Laconia Daily Sun, he must be told to leave politics in his car, this should not be a campaign stop.

John briefed the Club on the results of our Bike Week concession stand; 101 hours were performed by members, and 22 by former members, honorary members, and friends of Kiwanis. A total of $3,676 was given to Kara for deposit. With expenses, the net was $3,073, and that was with 1 1/2 days lost to weather.

Immediately following John's report, President Bill thanked John for his exceptional efforts in organizing the concession stand on the Boardwalk and then presented him with a Certificate of Appreciation. The certificate, which was signed by President Bill Gile, recognized JOHN WALKER for "his dedication, perseverance and grace, with which he responsibly organizes and coordinates our Bike Week fund-raiser. We also acknowledge and honor his passion and work to better the lives of children everywhere."

Kathy Calvin briefed the Club as to the Kids in the Park series, Kiwanis is on for Friday July 12th to read to kids from 10-11 AM. She needs volunteers. It is expected that the audience will be very young.

Steve Loughlin reviewed our scholarship results with some very interesting historical facts:

The Laconia Kiwanis Club, through the Lakes Region Scholarship Foundation, has been awarding scholarships for college bound seniors annually for over 60 years. When the organization was founded in 1956, the Laconia Kiwanis Club was one of the original eight donors!  At that time, the Club donated a total of $200 to two recipients. In most cases, scholarships from the Laconia Kiwanis Club are awarded to active LHS Key Club members. This year, the Laconia Kiwanis Club awarded six scholarships totaling $3,750.  This included current graduates Meaghan Ash, Jennifer Bateman and Gabi Djuric as well as three recent graduates.

Since the inception of the Lakes Region Scholarship Foundation in 1956, the Laconia Kiwanis Club has awarded scholarships totaling $117,475.

The Laconia Kiwanis Club handles the administration of the Smith Memorial Scholarship, which was established in honor of Charlie Smith. Charlie Smith was a Laconia Kiwanis Club member during the 1970’s into the early 1990’s.

Because of his active participation and hard work, Charlie Smith was recognized as Kiwanian of the Year in 1982 and again in 1988. Charlie was renowned and respected as an agriculturist and specialist in soils, grasses and hays. While still a student at UNH, he opened Smith’s Apple Orchard in Belmont, which later became one of the area’s first “pick your own” orchards. (The orchard was sold to Rob and Wende Richter in 1985.)

As a Laconia City Councilman during the 1980’s, Charlie was a major proponent for upgrading the outdated cinder track at Opechee Park. The new track was named Smith Track for Charlie Smith and Erwin Smith (former Laconia track coach) “in honor of their years of service and dedication to youth.”

Since its inception in 1997, the Charles M. Smith – Kiwanis Club of Laconia Award has awarded scholarships totaling $15,000 which includes scholarships to this year’s recipients - Brady Ellsworth and Desteney Jones.

GUEST SPEAKER: Betty Ballantyne introduced our guest speaker, George Spencer.

George Spencer is the Executive Editor of the Dartmouth Alumni Magazine. He moved to Lebanon, New Hampshire, 18 months ago from Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

As much as he loves Big Green and Carolina Blue, he prefers a darker shade of blue. Duke blue. He is also fond of Big Orange, having earned a law degree and an MBA at the University of Tennessee.

George has four children—a son and three daughters, one in Manhattan, two in California, and another in Boulder, Colorado. His hobby is painting. Last year George put down his paintbrush to write the book Courage 101: True Tales of Grit and Glory. He worked with CATV, his local cable access channel, to create 80 short documentaries based on chapters of the book.

George began by defining what the word "courage" means. Its derivative languages are Latin and French, Couer being a French word for heart. Courage means strong/stout/brave heart. The definition goes on to recognizing the opposite of the word to be "fear". There must be fear to overcome for courage to happen. George began his presentation with a sketch of John Wayne's life and the courage he showed in persevering and succeeding, and then sketched several of his short stories about Brownie Laws, Dr. Seuss, Julianne Kopoecke, Harold Russell, and Victor Frankel. All had the theme of courage. All against long odds.

During the Q&A, George talked about his own journey in that in 2017 he was laid off and challenged himself to write a book in 101 days. He wrote 101 short stories in that time and was the topic of this presentation.
