Alisha Morey of the Youth Services Bureau was our guest speaker. The Youth Services Bureau was established to provide programs and services aimed at preventing juvenile delinquency and empowering youth. The organization is made up of the director, a youth counselor and a case manager. The programs and services emphasize accountability, education, decision-making skills, and self esteem development in a positive, non-judgmental and confidential atmosphere. Programs and services are cost effective and focus on reducing or preventing court intervention and placements. The Bureau operates through 7 programs: court diversion, upswing, out of school suspension, Belknap County Teen Court, The Challenge Course, Prime for Life, Belknap County Family Mediation. The Bureau serves kids between the age of 7-17 and their prime function is to keep them out of court and keep them from re-offending. The Bureau’s office is located on the second floor of the Community Center in Laconia, 306 Union Ave in Laconia. For more information, call 603-524-9457 or log on to their website by "clicking" here.

Roger Ballantyne Update (by W. Stephen Loughlin)
Joe Adrignola and I had the pleasure to visit with Roger “Spaceshot” Ballantyne last Thursday afternoon. As many of you know, Roger has been battling cancer for about two years.
Roger is presently off the sutent drug he had been taking and is feeling much better. Joe and I were both pleased to hear that, at this time, Roger is taking no pain medication either. However, he is on steroids, which are helping with the adverse effects he experiences due to radiation necrosis. Radiation necrosis is caused by Roger getting high dosages of radiation in October (2006) and again in February (2007) for tumors on his brain. This radiation can irritate the tissue and cause swelling in the brain. Steroids help bring the swelling down in the brain.
Prior to Thursday’s visit, I hadn’t seen Roger for several months and, at that time; he previously weighed about 189 pounds and did not look like the guy I’d known for over 30 years. However, as can be expected, the steroids have had some side effects including weight gain. Compared to the substantial weight loss he experienced last year, Roger looked great!
As a former marine, Roger continues to courageously move forward. His next appointment with his doctors in Boston isn’t until mid August. Roger wishes his best to his friends in Kiwanis. Feel free to send him an email and extend him your best wishes by clicking here.
