NEWS FROM THE PREZ:
• President Roger announced there will be no price change in next year’s catering provided by Contigiani’s.
• He also read a nice letter from Joel Moenkhoff, last meeting’s guest Kiwanian from Nashville. After hearing Dan Schroeder, our guest speaker from the Wright Museum, Jeff decided to visit the Wolfeboro attraction. He noted, “it was fantastic and I recommend your folks checking it out. Joel welcomes correspondence from Laconia Kiwanis Club members. You can e-mail Joel by “clicking” here.
• Roger complimented Betty Ballantyne on her great job of recruiting guest speakers. However, she needs input from all members to help her keep our schedule filled.
• Roger then solicited input from the Committee Chairs.
NEWS FROM OUR MEMBERS:
Mike Marsh confirmed the date of September 24th for the meet and greet at Stonegate Winery. Cost will be an additional $5 per member to cover the wine tasting. Members are encouraged to bring a guest.

Jack also announced the re-schedule of the Home Run Derby to September 15th. Proceeds will be split between Kiwanis and RVYSEF. Jack then announced that Brian Winslow will be spearheading the Roger’s Ride event and a good discussion ensued about potentially linking with all of the autumn rides.
Kathy Calvin recommended looking into utilizing a regional Kiwanis newsletter to get the word out about our events and to peruse same to see what we may be able to team with to enhance the funds-raising opportunities.
Steve Loughlin read a thank you from Rachel Garen of Gilmanton for being named recipient of a $500 scholarship established by the family of former Kiwanian Charlie Smith.* Miss Rachel Garen is studying Environmental Studies at UNH. To read Rachel's thank you note, "click" here.

WHO WAS CHARLIE SMITH?
Charlie Smith was a Laconia Kiwanis Club member during the 1970’s into the early 1990’s. Because of his active participation and hard work, he was recognized as Kiwanian of the Year in 1982 and again in 1988. Charlie was renowned and respected as an agriculturist and specialist in soils, grasses and hays. While still a student at UNH, he opened Smith’s Apple Orchard in Belmont, which later became one of the areas first “pick your own” orchards. (The orchard was sold to present owners Rob and Wende Richter in 1985.) As a Laconia City Councilman during the 1980’s, Charlie was a major proponent for upgrading the outdated cinder track at Opechee Park. The new track was named Smith Track for Charlie Smith and Erwin Smith (former Laconia track coach) “in honor of their years of service and dedication to youth.”
