ATV Fund Raiser
It was a good weekend at the Stratham Fair, despite being rained out on Thursday. Thanks to Larry, Ed Merski, Roger and Pam Landry, Kathy, Ed Chertok, Denise, Lori, Brian, Arlene and Jim Fortier. A special thanks to Jim and Warren for bringing the units down and back. In total, $1,637.00 was raised. Up next: this weekend the Cheshire Fair:

CHESHIRE FAIR

There was a scheduling error for the Cheshire Fair coming up the following week. If the club wants to participate, we must be there for all 5 days and not just the final 3. We have been circulating a sign up sheet for just the weekend: Friday through Sunday, August 1st -3rd, but we must fill the first 2 days as well in order to be included. Past President Joe Collie passed around a revised sign up sheet.

Hey Kiwanis…THANKS!
We received a thank you note from Charlie and Jennifer for the opportunity to speak at the club’s meeting last week. They had a great time and thanked Steve Loughlin for his promoting their new book and helping them sell several copies.

Dianne read a "thank you" from Jennifer (and Charlie).

Berlin Interclub…
Warren Mitchell said the club has a good time at the Berlin Interclub last week. They left Laconia at 3pm. Ron Penn, Jim Fortier, Dick Metz, Larry Murphy, and Ian Davis (Warren’s friend) made the trip. Jim was able to successfully steal a gavel from the Berlin Club. Turns out it belonged to John Morton, a former Kiwanis International President. Ooops. Well, if the Berlin club wants it back…they’ll come and get it.

Held for ransom.

Happy Dollars:
Russ Beane gave 2 happy dollars for his wife getting 2 new knees. He has been playing a male nurse the last 3 weeks. Roger Landry gave 2 happy dollars for the cow that was across from the Kiwanis booth at the Stratham Fair. Warren Mitchell gave a happy dollar for the tornado missing all of us. Joe Collie gave 2 happy dollars, 1 for the tornado being in South Wolfeboro while he was in North Wolfeboro and 1 for the club’s efforts at the Stratham Fair. Ed Chertok gave a happy dollar for John Morton, a former Kiwanis International President whom he and most of the club members knew. It was John's old gavel that was swiped by Jim at the Berlin Interclub last week. Ed says John Morton was “quite a guy.”

Fines:
Peter Karagianis was pinless and so was Russ Beane. 50 cents was collected. Warren Mitchell was pinless.

Guest Speakers:

Marybeth Bailey from the Circle Program was our guest speaker. She is the program’s Volunteer Coordinator. The Circle Program’s mission is to provide socially and economically disadvantaged New Hampshire girls with new opportunities to develop the skills, courage and confidence they need to handle the challenges in their lives. We do this by offering the girls in a unique combination of adult and peer support that is delivered through residential summer camp and year round mentoring. The Circle Program serves girls in central and northern New Hampshire, including the Concord, Laconia, and Plymouth area. Girls between the age of 9 and 11 are referred to the program by teaches, guidance counselors, and social service agencies. They enroll 36 girls at a time. Bailey said the Program started 16 years ago. She shared the results of a recent survey of volunteers and mentors. She said also highlighted the improvements made over the last four years at the camp in Groton. They have added a library, more bathrooms, more space, and more activities. Currently, of the 36, 6 girls are from the Laconia area and 3 girls are in the Circle Graduate program. They are looking for 1 more mentor to match up a girl from Laconia. Goals for the future include doubling the mentor base and doubling the number of girls that are served by the program to 72. Steps to be taken include more public relations and a larger donor base and a larger volunteer mentor base. For more information: The Circle Program PO Box 815 Plymouth, NH 03264.
