News That Concerns Kiwanians and Their Families

Attendance:
23 including our guest speaker

Invocation:
Past President Warren Mitchell

Senior Members:
Ed Chertok, Paul Normandin, Howard Bacon, Warren Mitchell, Roger Webster, and Peter Karagianis

Down Memory Lane:
Roger Webster passed around some pictures he had in his collection of a Kiwanis trip to Pease Air Force Base in 1987. Some of the familiar faces in the photos included Ed Merski, Roger Ballantyne, and Larry Murphy. One club member asked "who is this guy with hair?"

Hey Kiwanis...THANKS!
We received a thank you from Brian Winslow at Community Health and Hospice, thanking the club for our recent donation of $5,000 to the Young Family program at CH&H. The letter explained the program and the benefit of supporting the cause. For more, log onto their website at www.chhnh.org. A photo op with check presentation is in the works. Stay Tuned..

Reading is Fundamental
There are 2 RIF sessions this week. The first is Wednesday, October 24th at Elm Street School from 1:30-2:30 in the afternoon. Signed up so far: Larry Murphy, Joe Collie, Joe Adrignola, and Kathy Calvin. Friday, October 26th, RIF will be at Woodland Heights. On the schedule that day so far: Don and Sue Nelson, Joe Adrignola, Kathy Calvin, and Dick Metz. We are also entertaining new names for the Reading is Fundamental program. Should you have a creative suggestion, e-mail Joe Adrignola at jna@mlolaw.com.

Kiwanis History...
For the benefit of newer members, and the new member we were installing that night, Dianne Roberts gave a brief overview of Kiwanis History. Some interesting facts: the first club was chartered in Detroit in 1915. Worldwide expansion came in 1962 and in 1987, women were allowed to join clubs. This year marks the 20th anniversary of women being allowed in Kiwanis Clubs. Kiwanis is a word with Native American origins. It has many meanings, including "having a good time." No joke!

...I didn't know that!

Peter Karagianis is shocked to learn so much about Kiwanis!

Welcome Aboard, Denise...
It's fitting that on the 20th anniversary of Kiwanis allowing women to join that we install a new female member, Denise Dow. Denise works at Rite Aid in Laconia and was brought into the club by senior member Ed Chertok, who grabbed her attention by wearing his Kiwanis hat into her store one day. She grew up in Concord and went to high school there and attended lots of Kiwanis events in that area while growing up. She said that she is very happy to be the newest member of our club.

Military Appreciation Day
Please remember that the Military Families Appreciation Day at the Belknap Mill is coming up this Saturday, October 27th from 11-2. Kiwanis is a sponsor of this event and has been promoted in all the publicity for it as such, so let's get some members there. We need 6 people, if possible. Setup starts at 8:30, so if you could show up between 8:30 and 11 to help prep for the day and then spend a few hours, it would be a big help. See Dick Metz that day when you arrive at the mill.

50/50:

Kathy Calvin gave $1 for the Red Sox win.
Ed Chertok gave $4 for 2 Red Sox wins, a UNH football win, and a great weekend on the lake.

Ed says "there's plenty for everyone.."

Fines:
None. We were all well behaved.

Guest Speaker

Dianne introduced Dave Harris with the Partnership for the Prevention of Chronic Disease. He said that there is a push on the Presidential Candidates to make prevention of chronic disease a central part of their health care plans, as these conditions and the treatment of them play a part in the high cost of health care. The mission of PFCD is to educate the public about chronic disease and potential solutions for individuals and communities; mobilize American to call for change in how governments, employers, and health institutions approach chronic disease, and to challenge policy makers on the health policy changes that are necessary to effectively fight chronic disease. The partnership is made up of an advisory board of CEO's and company heads from the private and public sector and dozens of partner organizations at the national and state level. For more, visit their website.
