REMINDER: All members are welcome to our Board meetings. Thank you, Kara for your participation!

From the President:
President Bill introduced Laconia Fire Department Chief Ken Erickson who conducted a thorough tour of the new fire station complete with fascinating historical factoids and a view of many historical artifacts on display in the Station.
Pictures from the tour are included below.

Following the tour, President Bill conducted the business portion of the meeting which included:
• Scott presented the budget results to date for this FY. Not much has occurred yet. Our Charities Fund balance is $53,149, and our General Fund balance is $2,794.

• Extensive conversation ensued on the very best venue to hold our meetings. It was decided that for now, we will be conducting our Business meetings at Hectors, with meals, and our Program meeting at the Laconia Fire Department Community room, a very, very nice venue for program presentations. In February, a hot meal will be provided as well. Betty Ballantyne is handling it for February. Meeting dates for February are February 12th at Hector's, and February 26th at the Laconia Fire Department. Our Program for February is Pleasant Street School with Principal Dave Levesque discussing the PAWS program.

• Bill began the discussion regarding Corporate Membership but no decisions were made, and further, more involved and detailed discussion is planned.

• Kara Stanley asked for some historical data to supplement a very nice Kiwanis International brochure the Club will be using as a hand-out at public events. John will research the data and get Kara the numbers.

• Extensive conversation was held concerning the May Bicycle Safety Rodeo. Since Meredith was unable to attend tonight's meeting, no decisions were made. She has chaired the event the past four years.

From the Members:
John Walker reviewed for the Board members the monthly reporting requirements of the Club Secretary, and asked for help making sure he gets the info for submission in our monthly reports.

Don't Forget: Our next regular meeting will be held at Hector’s on January 22nd at Hector’s Restaurant.

Meeting adjourned at 7:57 p.m.x

OUR NEXT REGUALR MEETING IS AT HECTOR'S, ON MONDAY, JANUARY 22ND AT 6:00 PM

Chief Erickson points out the well polished fireman's pole.
The pole allows firefighters responding to an alarm to quickly descend to the ground floor faster than by using a standard staircase.

Chief Erickson points to a picture of the steamer used by the department in 1912.
Details of the steamer and the lanterns mounted adjacent to the picture are explained below.

Chief Erickson was proud to show the Deputy Chief helmet once worn by long time fireman and past Laconia Kiwanian, Leo Sasseville.

Subsequent to being a volunteer fireman and later the Fire Chief of the South Hooksett fire department, Leo Sasseville transferred to Laconia to become the first training officer for the Laconia Fire Department, a position he held for many years until he retired.

Leo Sasseville joined the Laconia Kiwanis Club in 1971, was voted Kiwanian of The Year (1974-75) and later served as president in (1979-1980). He was a charismatic member of the Club and, for many years, delighted the members and their children with his unique storytelling at the annual Laconia Kiwanis Club Children’s Christmas Party.

Subsequent to his retiring and settling in Sun City, Arizona in the early 1990’s, Leo visited the Laconia Kiwanis Club in 2002. To view a picture of Leo with his wife, Claire, and two Kiwanis Club past presidents from that 2002 visit, “click” here.

SALVATION ARMY KETTLE WRAP UP:

The Laconia Kiwanis Club raised $2,065.55 for their efforts by ringing the bell for the Salvation Army on 12/22/17. That $2,065.55 amount was more than any other downtown group (not including Kettle Blitz Day) raised and about $1,300 more than the amount raised by the Laconia Rotary Club.

Kathy Calvin, who oversees the management of the kettle ringing for the Salvation Army, has heard that the Laconia Rotary Club is looking forward to the 2018 challenge because the Laconia Rotary Club will be ringing on Monday, December 24th and the Laconia Kiwanis Club will be ringing the bell on Saturday, December 22nd.

The rivalry between the two clubs has gone on for many decades as evidenced by this story that appeared in the 12/23/17 edition of The Laconia Daily Sun. “Click” here for details.
