News from Pres. Dick:
President Dick read a thank you from Al Cantor, Trustee of The Mayhew Program.

News from Sec. Kathy:
Secretary Kathy updated us on the most recent Kiwanis KARES event at Pleasant Street School. Those that attended were Chet Cilley, Joe Adrignola, Don & Sue Nelson, Dick Metz and Kathy Calvin. The next Kiwanis KARES event will be at Woodland Heights in March celebrating Dr. Suess’s birthday. Kathy also let us know that Kiwanis KARES will be hosting a booth at the Education Fair at the Laconia Middle School on March 16th. Volunteers are welcome.

News from the Key Club:
Key Club Co-President Jocelyn Morin reported that, during February vacation, 12 students from Key Club will go to Dickinson, Texas to work for Habitant for Humanity. The Club has done fund raising and has enough money in the account but will do more fund raising after the trip. Right now they are not sure where they will be staying because they have had difficulties getting in touch with Dickinson Kiwanis. However, they have secured a church basement as a last option but there are no showers.

Guest Speaker:
Carroll Stafford gave an introduction of nearly three minutes on his guest, Warren Hutchins, who gave a presentation about the food industry. Warren spent 38 years in the food industry, 22 of them as Senior Vice President for Product Development, Purchasing and Distribution for the Ground Round Restaurants. Warren has a degree in Economics from Nassau College and an MBA from University of Maine. He currently sits on the Laconia Planning Board and the Lakes Region Planning Commission.

Warren let us know that there are two sides to the food industry…food you eat at home and food you eat other places (like restaurants). He worked on the restaurant side of the food industry. Warren enjoyed his time in the industry and found that each supply line for products was very different. He told us that the beef industry was entirely different from the fishing industry which was entirely different from the produce industry. Warren purchased food from all over the country and primarily worked through Maine distributors out of Binghamton, NY. He was able to control his pricing by contracting with suppliers through his distributors.

Warren pointed out that he was always developing new products and, in fact, the company he worked for required that he eat out many nights a week just for research purposes. There are three things to consider when deciding on a new product: 1. Does it taste good? 2. Can the Cooks replicate it?... and 3. Does it make money? Warren let us know that the way you price menu items is by figuring out what someone might pay for it. He did a lot of market research to determine this, and kept his eye on the competitor's pricing. All in all Warren really enjoyed working in the food industry and would recommend it as a career choice for anyone.
