From the President:
President Bill introduced our Program speakers then paused for dinner. Our next Business/Board meeting has been changed to Tuesday, July 10th at Hector's, and next regular Club meeting July 23rd at the Fire Station.

From the Members:
Kathy Calvin reviewed KARES developments and talked about the 2018/19 plan which will include a single book distribution (Aesop's Tales) for all Laconia 3rd graders and then two distributions each of two books per child for the remainder of the next school year.

Kathy also circulated two packets of thank you notes from Woodland Heights School third-graders.

Betty Ballantyne briefed the Club on the progress made to date in planning for the 10th (and final) Roger's Ride this August, the 10th anniversary of Roger's death. We will again be raffling off a Stand-Up Paddleboard. It is hoped that members will step up and sell a lot of raffle tickets.

Steve Loughlin reviewed our scholarship results with some very interesting historical facts:

The Laconia Kiwanis Club, through the Lakes Region Scholarship Foundation, has been awarding scholarships for college bound seniors annually for over 60 years. When the organization was founded in 1956, the Laconia Kiwanis Club was one of the original eight donors.  At that time, the Club donated a total of $200 to two recipients. In most cases, scholarships from the Laconia Kiwanis Club are awarded to active LHS Key Club members. This year, the Laconia Kiwanis Club awarded nine scholarships totaling $4,000.  This included current graduates Chloe Bertocchi, Dakota Cross, Alexyah Dethvongsa, and Emily Perry as well as five recent graduates.

Since the inception of the Lakes Region Scholarship Foundation in 1956, the Laconia Kiwanis Club has awarded scholarships totaling $113,725.

The Laconia Kiwanis Club handles the administration of the Smith Memorial Scholarship, which was established in honor of Charlie Smith. Charlie Smith was a Laconia Kiwanis Club member during the 1970’s into the early 1990’s.

Because of his active participation and hard work, Charlie Smith was recognized as Kiwanian of the Year in 1982 and again in 1988. Charlie was renowned and respected as an agriculturist and specialist in soils, grasses and hays. While still a student at UNH, he opened Smith’s Apple Orchard in Belmont, which later became one of the area’s first “pick your own” orchards. (The orchard was sold to present owners Rob and Wende Richter in 1985.)

As a Laconia City Councilman during the 1980’s, Charlie was a major proponent for upgrading the outdated cinder track at Opechee Park. The new track was named Smith Track for Charlie Smith and Erwin Smith (former Laconia track coach) “in honor of their years of service and dedication to youth.”

Since its inception in 1997, the Charles M. Smith – Kiwanis Club of Laconia Award has awarded scholarships totaling $14,000 which includes a scholarship to this year’s recipient - River Mathieu.

Guest Speakers:

Kathy Calvin introduced Scott and Nora McNeil from the Salvation Army.

This is the second or third career for both, who are in their fifth year as Captains of the Laconia Salvation Army. Scott is originally from Milford, MA and Nora is originally from Syracuse. Both have been in the ministry for 11 years with the first seven years spent in Salem, MA. This week they began their 5th year of ministry in the Lakes Region.

Before Scott began his presentation, he described a recent hike with his son to the top of Mount Washington, at age 60+, where he successfully used duct tape to keep the sole of his shoe attached, so he could finish the hike to the summit successfully. A certain witty redheaded member was heard to quip, "well I guess you saved your soul (sole)."

Captain Scott McNeil then gave a brief sketch of the history of the Salvation Army and went on to describe the International, National, and Local system structure of the Salvation Army.

The following slides summarize the McNeil’s presentation:

Scott then gave some interesting facts:

• Scott and Nora are both ordained ministers
• To date in 2018, 55 people have moved from the Carey House shelter into their own non-subsidized homes.
• The Carey House is a dry shelter; residents are drug-tested and must remain clean to stay.
• Laconia Salvation Army is self-sustained; no money comes from the "parent company".
• The McNeil’s 401K is Jesus Christ.

Meeting adjourned at 7:37 p.m.

Scott Laurent was recently spotted at his new job as Business Manager at Irwin Marine. Established in 1919, Irwin Marine is one of Laconia’s oldest and most successful businesses.

Scott, who for several years had been a retail mortgage loan originator for various lending institutions, is happy to have planted his occupational roots with a company headquartered in his hometown. He started his new job on June 6th during the company’s busiest time of the year. Scott reports he is very excited about his new opportunity, as it is one he has been looking for the past few years.

Congratulations!

LOST AND NOT FOUND:

For more than 10 years, a banner bearing the names of the charities supported by the Laconia Kiwanis Club has complimented our presence on the Boardwalk during Bike Week. This banner often influenced bikers and their families to support the Club with their patronage. Unfortunately, this year, the banner was not displayed as it may have been misplaced.

If anyone knows where the banner may be, please let us know by contacting John Walker at 603-520-4383.

Thank you!
