Jennifer “Jenna” Carroll-Plante, Executive Director of the Laconia Historical and Museum Society was our guest speaker. The Laconia Historical and Museum Society is a private, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to collecting, preserving, and interpreting the history of the City of Laconia. The Society places special emphasis on the city’s three major and distinct population centers, including Laconia, Lakeport and The Weirs.
The Laconia Historical Society was founded in 1951.
In 1994 Laconia Museum Society was incorporated in the city.
The two organizations merged in 1998 and the surviving entity became the Laconia Historical and Museum Society (LHMS).The activities of the LHMS are overseen by a 17 member volunteer Board of Directors. Daily operations are handled by the Executive Director. Membership to LHMS, grants, in-kind contributions, and sponsorships are sought for preserving and conservation of artifacts, for exhibitions, and for both child and adult programming. The annual budget is about $80,000.
Jenna noted she has worked to create six-month themes on various historical and cultural topics. She typically takes her cues from popular culture because she feels the best way to entice a more enhanced audience base is to incorporate contemporary culture with historical content.
The LHMS is on a campaign to increase it’s membership base. In order to increase its membership and secure its future, the Society is attempting to win $25,000, which is being awarded, by the Robert & Karin Finlay foundation, to the history and museum society who increases its membership numbers more than any other in its respective category. The LHMS is competing to win that money which will help it to provide educational programs open to the public and validate the work its trying accomplish.
Last year the Society had 158 memberships with about 200 members. They’re now 10 months into the challenge with two months left to go and, at this point, have increased to 353 memberships with 444 members. To assist the Society with it’s goal, Jenna encouraged Kiwanians, their friends, and families to become a member and to buy a ticket to the upcoming Jasee Vachon concert.
